I started covering the Bulls game for various clients in 1988 as the Bulls and Michael Jordan were becoming more and more competitive. Courtside photo access. It was a whole new world to me. One of my clients was Time Inc with my season credentials coming from them. As the Bulls became a perennial playoff team, I also shot some assignments for NBA photos just shooting random action and features. At some point the director of photography for the NBA Photos, noticed I was shooting some B/W art shots of Michael and not so much straight-ahead action. He encouraged me to work on these more with my own feel and style and rightly pointed out to me that there were already some of the greatest sports action photographers in the world covering every game Michael played. What could I add to that collection? He was right! That really freed me up to shoot more BW photos in my own style and feel and not get too tied into straight ahead action. It was very freeing and fun to do as wells to sit courtside during one of the most amazing runs of championship sessions in sprot history. It was a good lesson for me to learn to follow my own creative eye. These are a selection from those assignments.
