I think of many of these photographs as architectural portraits. The people are in their own spaces, where they live or where they work. They are defined by their space, and at the same time, they define their space. The objects that surround the people are as important as they are. As architecture cannot exist without people, people cannot exist without architecture.
Many of the people I photograph are people I know well or people with whom I have met only briefly. But sometimes I come across people by accident while I am roaming the city looking for something entirely different. Some of these I have seen around on occasion in the neighborhood, others come up to me and ask me to photograph them.
There is some magic when that happens.
